Merry Christmas! Er, Happy New Year!

A bit late on this one, but with the holiday, that's the case with the whole Lunch Notes! In fact, I had just enough drawn for the last day of school before winter break. Had they had one more day, I'd have missed one for the first time since they started! But with the kids off from school, I've been able to make more, so my daughter will have one when classes start up again.

It seems like I've got a bit of a Jack Kirby vibe going on here with the Monster King. Not the rendering, of course, but the pose looks a little like one of his villains coming right atchya.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow! Unexpectedly (to me), the Lunch Notes have been going on for just over a year – I started not long before last Thanksgiving. At the time, I didn't realize how big the story would get (although by Christmas, I'd clearly learned, since I had to leave off for the school holiday vacation). So this year I'll wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for reading!

School's back in session, and so are the Lunch Notes.

The story left off right when it took over from me as the writer. I had originally planned this sequence to be one where the Monster King fell in love with Cecilia, and demanded that she be his bride. She'd escape from the castle, of course, but somehow it felt all wrong (also, hackneyed, but that realization came later).

What happened was that I realized that a creature like the King would not be in any way influenced by finer emotions. But rage, jealousy, paranoia? Definitely his style. So his character ended up making me change my own story.

After the snailephant picture for the class, it was only a matter of time before I'd break down and do a finished drawing for an actual lunch note. And it seemed like the first appearance of the Big Bad was an appropriate place. My daughter had actually been asking if she would ever see the Monster King himself, instead of just his hand every so often. So I wanted to put a little extra into this one.

In a way, it also backfired, because she said everyone loved the big, finished page, and would I do them all like that. So I had to tell her that it took a lot of time, so she'd only get one note a week if I did it that way. So she graciously agreed to let me go back to doing it the regular way!

WooHoo! The 100th page! When I first conceived of the story, I had no idea that it would even get this far – I thought it would wrap up in a couple months at most. Along those lines, it's obvious to me now that this will extend into the next school year before it finally reaches a conclusion. When I mentioned this, my daughter seemed to think that it would never come to a conclusion, so she would just keep getting these as long as she took lunches (to, I don't know, college? She wasn't clear).

So, not too long from now, the Lunch Notes Project will be on summer vacation. But I'll get to that more as the end of the school year approaches.
